The industry of water for human consumption packaged in PET jugs, PVC jugs, and PC jugs is of great importance in Mexico; according to the market research agency Kantar, Mexican households buy an average of 1,385 liters (365 gallons) of water in jug containers. In this blog, we will touch on the topic of PET bottles, PVC bottles, and PC bottles in the bottled water industry and its importance.
Water jugs, also known as plastic water containers in their different materials such as PET jugs, PVC jugs, or PC jugs, have become an essential product for Mexican families since as one of the main avenues to have purified water for consumption.
To understand a little each of these plastic containers for water or jugs, I will give a brief explanation of each of them:
- PET Jug or PET Plastic Water Container: Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a non-porous thermosetting plastic that is perfect for making anything that needs to be waterproof. PET is a popular choice for beverage bottles because it is lightweight, safe, and fully recyclable. The PET bottle blow molding process works by reheating a pre-molded PET preform which is then automatically placed in a mold where high-pressure food-grade compressed air is injected into the preform, which expands to take the shape of the bottle mold.
- PVC Jug or PVC Plastic Water Container: Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is one of the most studied and used plastics given that due to its wide versatility it is used in areas as diverse as construction, energy, health, food preservation, and articles of daily use, among others. For the food industry, PVC has advantages compared to other materials, allowing the packaging of purified water intended for human consumption. The molding process for PVC jugs is a combined extrusion and blow molding process to produce hollow items, using the same principle as for the production of glass bottles.
- PC Jug or PC Plastic Water Case: Polycarbonate is used in different industries and is present in our daily life, its main qualities are: great resistance to impacts, to temperature (125°C), and its transparency. For the manufacture of PC jugs, the extrusion blow-molding process is used, which gives it an advantage over other types of jugs or plastic water containers that require a blow-molding process with biorientation of pre-injected preforms.
As we can see, each of the materials for the jugs, whether they are PET jugs, PVC jugs, or PC jugs, have characteristics that make them useful for the food industry, specifically, in the bottled water industry.
Plasscon manufactures, through this process with resins approved by the FDA, PET, PVC, and PC Water Jugs with the latest technologies.
