Myth: Most waste is plastic.

Plastic bottle or blister pack, which is better to pack medicines?

Glass and plastic containers are commonly used for pharmaceutical containers , and both meet with the objective of protecting and transporting all types of medicine , whether liquid, powder or solid (pill). They also have a great advantage in that they are versatile in size, easy to label and cost effective, making them viable for the industry.

Myth: Most of the plastic in the oceans is the result of improper care by the plastics industry.

Bio-based plastic materials are made partly or entirely from renewable raw materials. Copolyester systems, starch-based materials, polylactic acid, and cellulosic materials are primarily used to create these biobased plastics today. They can be biodegradable, but they don't have to be to be called Bio-based plastic.

Biodegradable plastics, under specific conditions determined by temperature, humidity, oxygen and time, can be converted into water, carbon dioxide and biomass.

Continuing with the different processes by which it is possible to manufacture different plastic products for the industries: pharmaceutical, food and cosmetics , we will talk about the Injection process, especially for the manufacture of Lids, Caps , Closures , Inserts and Dosing Cups .

Let’s learn a little about how plastic parts for the pharmaceutical industry are manufactured, such as: of Lids, Caps, Closures, Inserts and Dosing Cups through the injection process . The plastic injection technique consists of molding an element (in this case Lids, Caps, Closures, Inserts and Dosing Cups ) thanks to a mold that houses the piece. Polymers are injected into the mold under pressure through a nozzle and constant pressure is maintained to fill alls the spaces, crooks and cranies in the mold and then the part cools, giving it its final shape. Once the process is finished, the mold opens to drop the finished product onto a tray.

How is the melt of the polymer achieved so that it enters the mold? Well, in order to melt the polymer, a complex process must be followed that must be in complete coordination with the injection to control the temperature, which must be exact, quantity and synchronization in time. For this reason, although injection may seem like a simple process as it is currently the most widely used, the entire transformation requires exhaustive control.

In the transformation of plastic by injection, the molds are the ones that give the desired shape to the piece or pieces (in this case Lids, Caps, Closures, Inserts and Dosing Cups for the pharmaceutical industry), since a mold can have a single cavity, to inject one piece per cycle, or several cavities. As we have mentioned before, this process works in perfect synchronization as otherwise, large volumes of work would not be achieved. Remember that the pieces must be exact, so this synchronization cannot fail in all fundamental aspects: temperature, quantity, solidification, etc.

Below are the reasons why the fundamental elements mentioned before for the manufacture of pharmaceutical products through plastic injection are key:

 Temperature: This must be controlled very precisely to ensure that the injected polymer fuses correctly. It must be remembered that, for the injection process, it is necessary to heat up prior to injection and then cool down to achieve the desired piece. In the cooling process we will also depend on the type of piece required (size, shape, quantity,...). Therefore, temperature is one of the most important elements in the transformation process.

 Pressure: The pressure exerted by the process is also a very important element for the raw material to cool properly, adapting its shape to that of the mold used. Exerting strong and constant pressure is another of the most important requirements of the process.

 Speed: The polymer already molten through the resistance of the cavities goes directly to the mold in a matter of seconds. This process must be immediate and fast since, from the first moment the material enters the mold, its cooling process begins. For this reason, the passage to the mold must be very fast and controlled.

Compression Molding Process for the Manufacture of Compression Caps

Next, let’s talk about the Compression molding process , a method used to make Compression Caps for different Industries such as Pharmaceutical , Food and Cosmetics .

Compression molding , used to make Compression Caps , is a molding method in which molding material, usually preheated, is placed in the open mold cavity. The mold is closed, heat and pressure is applied to force the material into all areas of the mold, while the heat and pressure is maintained until the molding material has cured. The process is used on thermosetting resins (as opposed to thermoplastic resins) in a partially cured state, either in the form of pellets, putty, or preforms. Compression molding is a high-pressure method, ideal for manufacturing Compression Caps for the previously mentioned industries.

It is one of the lowest cost molding methods compared to other methods such as injection molding, on the other hand, little material is wasted, giving you an advantage when working with expensive compounds. Less fiber length degradation occurs in this process compared to injection molding.

What is the extrusion blow molding process and what is manufactured under this process?

We have already talked about processes for the elaboration or manufacture of different plastic products. This time, we are going to talk a little bit about the Blown Extrusion process , its advantages and what kind of products can be manufactured under this process.

Let's start by talking a little bit about what is Blown Extrusion? Extrusion Blow Molding or EBM, is a variant of the Extrusion Blow Molding Process and is the simplest blow molding process. The process consists of a hot tube of molten plastic material (better known as a parisson) being dropped from an extruder into a water-cooled mold. Once these molds are closed, air is injected through the top or neck of the part to be molded. Once the hot plastic material is blown and comes in contact with the mold walls, the material cools and the part maintains a rigid shape.

The extrusion blow molding process allows the manufacture of a wide variety of container shapes, sizes, neck openings, as well as the production of products with handles. The volume of production through this process can vary, reaching up to 350 products per hour on average.

Working under this process has many advantages, some of which are listed below:

- Molds with a much lower cost than injection mold and their manufacture is in a much shorter period of time.

As in co-extrusion, blown extrusion can be single-layer or multi-layer where different extruders are used to reach the same die to form a structure with different layers. This is very useful when it is required to increase the oxygen barrier, give it chemical resistance combined with transparency, etc.

WHAT IS AN INJECTION BLOW MOLDING PROCESS AND WHAT IS MANUFACTURED UNDER THIS PROCESS?

In previous blogs, we have talked about the different resins , types of products, their use, etc. This time we will talk a bit about the resin transformation process called Blow Injection.

But what is the Blow Injection molding process? Well, injection blow molding, or IBM, is a transformation process for thermoplastic resins that, as its name suggests, is made up of injection molding and blow molding. Injection blow molding is generally used for the manufacture of small-sized containers without the option of a handle. It is used for containers that have short tolerance ranges with threaded necks, wide mouth openings, solid handles, and styled shapes.

The resins used in the Blow Injection process are: High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Polypropylene (PP).

The Blow Injection process is relatively, very simple. It consists of injecting resin into a pin-shaped core, which forms what we call the preform; the core then goes to the blowing station to inject air and shape the resin according to the mold, and then it is cooled.

In short, there are three steps:

Injection.
Blowing.
Ejection of the product.

What is the preform? It is the stage in which the resin takes the shape to become the final product and is made up of a fully formed neck attached to a resin tube that will form the body of the container.

We already know the process and the resins used for this molding, now let's talk a little about the machinery and its components.

The blow molding machine consists of an injection unit to melt the resin. The melt is fed into a hot runner manifold where it is injected through nozzles into a hot mold. Inside the mold cavities the preform is formed around a core. The preform mold opens and the center bar is rotated and clamped in the hollow, cooled blow mold. The tip of the bar opens allowing compressed air to enter the preform, which is inflated to the shape of the final product. The blown product has a programmed weight that cannot be easily changed.

Generally, the molded container material is evenly distributed and no trimming or milling is necessary. After a cooling period, the blow mold is opened to eject the finished product, which is then leak tested before being shipped to the customer.

What is PC?

Polycarbonate or also known as PC is a group of thermoplastics, easy to work, mold and thermoform, it is widely used in modern manufacturing. Its name indicates that it is a polymer of functional groups linked by carbonate groups in a long chain. It is a material with synthetic properties.

Polycarbonates can be classified, according to the synthesis of the carbonate group, into polyaromatic carbonates and poly aliphatic carbonates. These latter are the product of the reaction of carbon dioxide with epoxides. Considering the thermodynamic stability of carbon dioxide, the use of catalysts is required.

Polycarbonate is already very common, used both in homes and industry, including architecture, because of its three main qualities: high impact resistance, temperature resistance (125°C) and transparency. In the food industry, it is used to make PC drums and water bottles for human consumption.

For the manufacture of PC bottles , the blown extrusion process is used, which gives it an advantage over other types of bottles that require a blowing process with biorientation of previously injected preforms, such as PET bottles . Likewise, another great advantage of PC bottles is that they do not shrink during washing, so that they can be used 50 to 60 times, while PET bottles have a useful life of 10 to 15 turns.

The myth behind the negative impact of PVC on health and the environment.

A myth has been generated in recent years about PVC and the negative impact it has on health and the environment, in order to confirm or deny all the myths that have been generated around PVC , it is important to know what it is, what it is made of and, in reality, whether it is a problem for human being or not.

First we will do a technical review of what polyvinyl chloride (better known by its acronym PVC ) ( C2H3Cl ) (also, polyvinyl chloride ) is the product of the polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer. It is the most versatile plastic derivative. It can be produced by four different processes: suspension, emulsion, mass and solution . It appears as a white material that starts to soften at around 80 °C and decomposes at around 140 °C. It is an addition polymer and also a resin resulting from the polymerization of vinyl chloride or chloroethene.

Why is PVC said to be the least petroleum-dependent plastic ?

This is because 43% of the PVC molecule comes from petroleum and 57% from salt, an unlimited source. On the other hand, it is remarkable that only 4% of the total oil consumption is used to manufacture plastic materials, and, of these, only one eighth is used for PVC .

In previous decades, the main material for manufacturing pharmaceutical containers, specifically Pill Boxes or Pill Bottles , was metal and glass, however, in the 1960's plastics became available to everyone due to their low cost, so plastics had come to be considered 'common', as a symbol of the consumer society.

What is and how does a Child Resistant Closure or Child Proof-Closure works?

The Child Resistant Closure, Child Proof Closure, Child Proof-Closure or simply CRC Closure is an injected cap made of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE or PAD) assembled with a Polypropylene (PP) cap which has a safety mechanism that prevents the capping bottle, even if children try to pull, bite or turn the bottle, they will not be able to access its content, thus avoiding accidents due to ingestion of medication. As mentioned above, the main objective of the Child Resistant Closure or Child Proof Closure or Child Proof-Closure or CRC Closure is to prevent children from suffering any type of intoxication due to accidental ingestion of medication, making access to the medication more difficult.

HOW DO THEY WORK?

The lids must effectively seal the container and, since it is in contact with the product, it must not react physically or chemically with it.
